Intercom Review 2026: Features, Pricing, and Fin AI

Intercom is the best messenger-first support platform you can buy — and the hardest to budget for. The published seat prices ($29 to $132 per month) look competitive until you add Fin, its AI agent, at $0.99 per outcome on top of seats. For a busy team, the AI line can match or exceed the seat bill. Add the September 2026 Salesforce acquisition of Fin into the picture, and Intercom is a platform in transition: excellent product, pricing that demands a spreadsheet before you sign.

Review method: this is a research-based review. We did not run a live Intercom trial; we verified seat prices, Fin billing, and the acquisition details against intercom.com/pricing and fin.ai/pricing as reported in third-party breakdowns checked 24–26 September 2026. No affiliate links; no vendor paid for placement.

The 2026 context: Fin, the rebrand, and Salesforce

Two structural changes landed in 2026. First, Intercom rebranded around its AI agent — the company behind Intercom now calls itself Fin, and the platform is sold AI-first as "Fin and Intercom." Second, Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin on 10 September 2026 (announced June 2026 at roughly $3.6 billion), with Fin continuing to serve its customers and the $0.99 outcome rate unchanged as of late September 2026.

The practical read: nothing about pricing changed at acquisition, but post-acquisition roadmaps can shift. If you're signing a long contract, price in that uncertainty — and ask what happens to Fin's standalone availability on non-Intercom help desks.

Seat pricing

Three plans on intercom.com/pricing (annual billing; monthly runs higher — $39/$99/$139):

Plan Annual (per seat/mo) Adds
Essential $29 Inbox, Messenger, Fin access, public help center
Advanced $85 Workflows automation, round-robin, private/multilingual help center, 20 free Lite seats
Expert $132 SSO, HIPAA, SLAs, multibrand, 50 free Lite seats

Notes worth knowing: the seat price is the annual rate; monthly billing is higher and the page doesn't disclose by how much without checkout. Lite seats (free on Advanced/Expert) let colleagues outside support read and comment internally without a full license — a genuine saving for companies where engineering and sales get looped in. There is no free plan; a 14-day trial is the on-ramp.

Fin AI: the $0.99-per-outcome math

Fin is Intercom's AI agent: it answers from your help center, past conversations, and connected sources, works across text and voice, and follows multi-step procedures. Billing is per outcome at $0.99, charged at most once per conversation — an outcome counts when the customer confirms a resolution, stops asking after Fin responds, or Fin completes a workflow (including a handoff). A reopened conversation refunds the outcome. Sales qualifications cost $9.99 each.

The worked example from September 2026 breakdowns: a 10-seat team on Advanced with 800 Fin outcomes a month pays roughly $1,642 — about 5.4× the public seat price alone. An 8-agent team with ~2,100 Fin outcomes lands near $2,760 a month before WhatsApp, proactive messaging, or Copilot. The seat price is the floor; conversation volume drives the invoice.

Two details that matter: Fin's 50-outcome monthly minimum applies only when Fin runs standalone on a non-Intercom help desk (Salesforce, HubSpot) — not on an Intercom seat plan. And Fin standalone carries unlimited Lite seats for teams keeping their existing help desk.

The add-on stack

Beyond seats and Fin outcomes, budget for:

  • Copilot (agent assist): $29 per agent per month on annual billing ($35 monthly) — separate from Fin.
  • Fin Voice: $1.99 per outcome — voice AI costs double the text rate.
  • Channels: SMS, WhatsApp, and phone minutes are pay-as-you-go on top of everything.
  • Proactive Support Plus: $99 per month including 500 proactive messages.

None of these are optional if your workflow needs them — they're line items, not tier features.

What Intercom does well

The messenger. Still the most polished in-app chat in the category — the reason product-led SaaS teams default here. Persistent history, in-app context, and a genuinely good mobile experience.

Fin's resolution quality. Fin's cited average resolution rate (76%, per the company) is the highest claimed in the category, and buyer reviews consistently rank it the most capable AI agent — it follows procedures, not just FAQ lookups.

Automation depth. The Workflows builder on Advanced+ is a real visual automation layer, not a macro list. Round-robin, behavioral triggers, and proactive messaging run from one place.

Lite seats. 20–50 free internal seats on Advanced/Expert is a quiet cost-saver competitors don't match.

G2 standing. Around 4.5/5 from roughly 3,855 reviews (observed mid-2026) — strong for the category, with complaints clustering on cost, not product.

Where the bill surprises

Volume-driven invoices. The $0.99 outcome is fair per unit, but outcomes scale with your success at automation — the better Fin works, the more you pay. That's a strange incentive to model.

Forecast difficulty. You can't know your outcome volume until you've run real traffic. The 14-day trial helps, but enterprise buyers should demand a volume-based estimate before signing annual.

The Salesforce question. The acquisition closed 10 September 2026 with pricing unchanged, but long-term packaging under Salesforce is unknowable. Multi-year contracts deserve a pricing-lock clause.

SMB cost complaints. The most consistent theme in buyer reviews: small teams love the product and wince at the total. Essential at $29 looks affordable until Fin outcomes and channels stack up.

Fin standalone: using Fin without Intercom

One of 2026's more interesting options is running Fin on top of your existing help desk instead of migrating to Intercom. Fin is sold standalone for teams on Salesforce, HubSpot, and other platforms: $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum (about $49.50/month) and unlimited Lite seats. It answers from your help center and past conversations wherever your tickets already live.

The honest assessment: standalone Fin is a good way to test AI-first support without a platform migration, and the minimum makes the experiment cheap. The trade-offs are integration depth — Fin can't reach as far into workflows on a foreign help desk — and roadmap risk under Salesforce, which has obvious incentives to favor its own ecosystem over time. If the pilot works, the question becomes whether to go all-in on Intercom seats or keep Fin as an AI layer on your current stack. There's no universally right answer; it depends on how much of the value comes from the messenger versus the AI.

Who should buy Intercom

  • Product-led SaaS teams whose customers live inside the app — this is the core fit.
  • Teams that want the best AI agent in the category and can model per-outcome costs.
  • Companies already running high chat volume where the messenger quality justifies the premium.
  • Teams keeping another help desk but wanting Fin standalone for AI ($0.99/outcome, 50-outcome minimum).

Who should skip it

  • Budget-capped teams that need predictable invoices — per-outcome billing is the opposite of predictable.
  • Email-first support orgs — Zendesk or Freshdesk cover email+chat cheaper.
  • Teams wary of post-acquisition roadmap risk under Salesforce.
  • Very small teams — there's no free tier, and the add-on stack punishes low seat counts.

How many Fin outcomes will my team actually use?

There's no way to know without running real traffic — which is exactly the budgeting problem. As a rough frame: if Fin resolves 30% of 5,000 monthly conversations, that's 1,500 outcomes or $1,485/month in AI billing alone. Run a pilot on your actual volume during the trial, measure the outcome rate, and multiply before signing annual. Never budget Fin from a vendor's resolution-rate marketing.

Is Intercom HIPAA compliant?

The Expert tier ($132/seat) includes HIPAA compliance features. Lower tiers don't. Healthcare-adjacent teams should confirm the current BAA terms directly with Intercom before buying, since compliance packaging can change.

  • Seats: Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per month (annual); monthly billing higher.
  • Fin AI: $0.99 per outcome on top of seats, at most once per conversation; Fin Voice $1.99.
  • The seat price is the floor — a busy 10-seat team can pay 5× the seat price in total.
  • Salesforce completed the Fin acquisition on 10 September 2026; pricing unchanged, roadmap now answers to Salesforce.
  • Best-in-category messenger and AI agent; worst-in-category cost predictability.

FAQs

How much does Intercom cost in 2026?

Seats cost $29 (Essential), $85 (Advanced), or $132 (Expert) per seat per month on annual billing. Fin AI adds $0.99 per outcome on top. Copilot is $29 per agent per month extra; SMS, WhatsApp, and phone are pay-as-you-go. A 10-seat Advanced team with 800 monthly Fin outcomes pays roughly $1,640 a month all-in.

What is a Fin outcome?

An outcome is Fin's billing unit: it counts when the customer confirms a resolution, stops asking after Fin responds, or Fin completes a workflow (including a handoff). It's charged at most once per conversation, and reopened conversations refund the outcome. Sales qualifications are billed separately at $9.99.

Did Salesforce buy Intercom?

Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin — the company behind Intercom, which rebranded around its AI agent in 2026 — on 10 September 2026, in a deal announced at roughly $3.6 billion. Pricing was unchanged at acquisition; the platform is still sold as Intercom with Fin AI.

Is Intercom worth it over Zendesk?

For in-app, messenger-first SaaS support with best-in-class AI, yes — nothing matches the messenger. For email-heavy or omnichannel-at-scale support, Zendesk is usually cheaper and more predictable. See Intercom vs Zendesk for the full comparison.

Does Intercom have a free plan?

No. There's a 14-day free trial and no permanent free tier. Fin can run standalone on another help desk with a 50-outcome monthly minimum (~$49.50/month).
